What is Life Coaching?

If you want to move your life and work forward you’ll usually need to get clarity in five key areas, and this is where life coaching is so useful:

  1. Know what you want: Knowing what you really want can be the hard part, as so many of us don’t know what we want

  2. Know yourself: This is about re-connecting with yourself, who you are, what you are passionate about, your interests, what inspires you, what motivates you, what you are good at, and what gets in the way, which might be that you’ve actually already moved on in some way, or have hidden potential, but don’t know it. Self awareness is so very often the key to change. Finding these is hard on your own and using someone skilled at it is an investment all on its own
  3. Have more choices: once aware, you are in a better position to choose. Yet people so often feel very limited in their options until coaching helps open up so many more possibilities
  4. Clarify your vision: What you want to create, what is your purpose, what would give meaning, where are you going, what is your direction
  5. Take action: The big enemy of personal change is procrastination or avoidance. Here you plan, set goals and intentions and take action – and address what gets in the way and turn it to your advantage

The alchemical process of coaching

The alchemist was one who (it is said) changed base metal into gold. Well, this can be the experience of having coaching!

Very often a client will, having outlined the issue, expect to move rapidly from Step One above, goal setting, to Step Five, taking action. Thus they can miss the alchemy of the work.

The essence of good coaching is to explore together what has brought you to coaching, what you want, what’s going on currently, and what gets in the way. In there somewhere is a potential insight or even a breakthrough that can take you, the client, to a new level of awareness.

At that point, a whole new meaning can be placed on the situation, and on you, and you then can move to developing a far more empowering vision and take action far more positively to realise it.

What I bring

I bring to this work my in-depth knowledge derived from my training in Gestalt and NLP, which enable me to bring different and creative approaches to bear on the work, plus very extensive experience from the fields of education, organisational learning and development, business and personal development.

Two people talking

We can hold ourselves up in our development through our beliefs, values and ideas that are often past their sell-by date. Working with awareness and with people’s beliefs and decisions, often outside their current awareness, we can tap into a whole realm of possibility. Thus when people make a breakthrough, it releases a whole new energy and enthusiasm for life and for what is possible.

In this, you are the expert on you, you have the answers, outside of view, and you have ownership: you are the captain and the navigator and the owner of your ship. I am through my skilled knowledge of the process asking the totally appropriate questions and facilitating the emergence of the next level in you.
