Emotional Intelligence
A powerful way to become a truly effective leader is to develop your emotional
intelligence.
Emotional Intelligence (EI or EQ) concerns your ability to become aware of your emotional state and
manage that state both for yourself and in your awareness of others and how you handle your relations with them.
Its core capability is Self-Awareness.
For example, in terms of your effectiveness at work, EI far outweighs IQ: for all jobs, EI
contributes 66.6% and IQ 33.3%; for leaders it is 85% and 15% respectively.
My coaching is designed to facilitate your EI development in four key areas:
Self-Awareness
The core skill, which enables you to guide your own behaviour: it includes being aware of your emotions and
their effects on work, performance, relationships, etc., knowing your strengths and development areas and your
belief in yourself.
Self-Management
Crucially this concerns your ability to keep disruptive feelings under control but also how you manage yourself,
such as your ability to be authentic and open, flexibility, your internal driver to improve performance, the
readiness to take the initiative and your level of optimism.
Social Awareness
This is about your attunement to others, with the vital ability to empathise with others' emotions, perspectives
and concerns. Such awareness extends to an awareness of the currents within an organisation and a readiness to
provide service to customers.
Building Relationships
The ability to build effective relationships within organisations, displaying leadership qualities in, for
example, inspiring and motivating others, an awareness of and responsiveness to others' developmental needs, the
ability to influence others, open and clear communication, a readiness to listen, the ability to work in and with
teams and the ability to manage conflict and handle change positively.
As a priority, I seek to develop self-awareness, since the other areas depend on
self-awareness. If you don't know what you're doing, how can you change it?
